Danger in the Fun House
September 8, 2007 408 Comments
Andy’s feeling a little dangerous today. He needs some thrills and excitement. So the Funhouse presents three dangerous items for the picks today. First, a frightening roller-coaster game demo will have you terrorized. Then explore the dangers of sticking foreign objects in the microwave. Finally, watch out, because comedienne Kathy Griffin has an evil twin on the loose.
Funhouse Picks of the Day

Fantasy Roller-Coaster - Ride From Hell
Want to ride the scariest ride of your life? Here it is! In the spirit of Roller-coaster Tycoon (but not really), comes this gorgeously rendered game from Redlynx.com, which gives you a ride on the most dilapidated coaster you’ve ever seen. You play as a brakeman on the train. You have simple controls. Use the right arrow key to accelerate the train cars or the left arrow key to brake. The action takes place on a 2-D side scrolling track. The train starts out on its own and you take over the controls from there.
Go too fast and you’ll crash the coaster, topple it over or miss the track altogether. In this demo, you only get one chance. If you crash or derail, the game ends. (Although in the full version of the game, you just get a penalty for crashing.) Along the way the passengers will scream and let fly with little hearts of appreciation, but only if you show them some thrills. If the ride is too boring you don’t score any points. But with this coaster, the ride can never be boring. The hills are very steep, there are dead animals lying on the track and big chucks of the coaster have collapsed, leaving sections where you have to jump from one track to the next. This sort of action brings back fond memories of jumping mine cart rails in Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Country.
The backgrounds and driving music are beautifully rendered and give the game a great visual appeal. It’s very easy to crash the train, however, so you have to determine when it’s best to brake and when you need to push a little faster to make a leap.
This is a game demo which features only one track…The Moonlight Track. However, another version with a different track can be played here. Other tracks come with the full version which you can purchase for Windows only. My only complaint is a bit of a stutter sometimes in the music. The graphics take a long time to load as well. But, this game will keep thrill seekers busy for a while.

Easy Mac Micro Maniac - Meltdown in 5…4…3…2…1
Go on admit it, you’ve always been curious what would happen if you put ketchup packets or Christmas lights in the microwave. You just never had the guts to actually do it. Now, without burning down your house or making your kitchen smell like burnt plastic for 3 months, you can vicariously experience the thrills of putting various items in the microwave.
This site has a video depiction of a microwave in the center of the screen and several experimental items scattered around the rest of the screen, awaiting you to place them in the microwave and see what happens. Items include a football, a tomato, eggs, soap, jelly beans, and more. As you run your cursor over the items, you will see a little picture of them. After you nuke them, the picture will turn into a melted version (very clever touch to this somewhat juvenile site). I also like the little timer below the video screen, which gives you a countdown to the moment of meltdown.

Kathy Griffin’s Mini She
I just knew Kathy Griffin had a twin sister. I didn’t realize she was a little person. This video is short, but shows irrefutable proof of the Griffin Sisters in action.
